Meet Newt, our first in-house-built VW Crafter van

Van #109, built from scratch in the VC workshop in Bristol. A 4-berth manual Crafter LWB with 400Ah of Victron lithium, 440W solar, 270L of water, no gas on board, and delivery miles only.

Newt is the one we built ourselves. Number 109, and the first camper ever to roll out of the VC workshop in Bristol, designed and built by the in-house VC build team from a brand-new VW Crafter LWB with delivery miles only. The name came off the number plate, and the newt found its way into the ceiling panels too. This is what happens when the people who give away campervans for a living finally build one of their own.

Step in and it opens up rather than closes in. Three separate living areas. A sofa that seats four and pulls out to a very long double. A second double up in the pop-top. A big solid timber worktop, planed, glued, and oiled by hand in our workshop. And a full wet room out back with a hidden loo and a full-height wardrobe. Dark olive units against warm terracotta seats, ash detailing, and a panelled ceiling washed in LED light.

Then the bit that matters when you're miles from a plug: 400Ah of Victron lithium, 440W of solar, a 3000VA inverter, 270 litres of water in underslung tanks, and a Truma diesel heater. No gas on board at all. Two induction rings, an 85L fridge-freezer, and a Dometic oven that microwaves and air fries. Everything you can cook at home, you can cook in here. Brand-new 2025 VW Crafter LWB, delivery miles only, MOT not due until 2028. We are VannyCampers. This time, we built the camper too.

What kind of campervans do you give away?

Every VC van is a premium, fully hand-built conversion. No flat-pack kitchens, no carpet on the walls. Think real wood, proper kitchens with compressor fridges and gas hobs, hot showers, diesel heating, lithium batteries, solar panels, and comfortable beds. Every van has its own name and personality.

What base vehicles do you use?

We use Mercedes Sprinters, VW Crafters, Fiat Ducatos, and Peugeot Boxers. All of them are under 3.5 tonnes, which means they can be driven on a standard UK driving licence.

Who builds the vans?

We work with a small number of trusted specialist UK converters. We also now build vans in-house at our Bristol workshop. Every build is checked by the VC team before it goes live.

Is the van insured when I collect it?

The van will be registered in your name. You'll need to arrange your own insurance before driving it away. We can advise on this after you win!

Can I see the full spec of the current van?

How do I collect the van if I win?

Our team will contact you after the draw to arrange everything. Collection is from Bristol. We'll do a full handover with you so you know exactly how everything works before you drive away.

What if I don't have a driving licence?

The van can still be registered in your name. You'll just need a licensed driver to collect it and drive it for you.

Do I need a special licence to drive it?

No. All our vans are under 3.5 tonnes and are able to be driven by anyone with a standard UK driving licence.

Is the van insured when I collect it?

The van will be registered in your name during handover but you will need to arrange your own insurance before driving it away. We work closely with a specialist insurer and are able to help with this process.
